A rebuild of the Region: Earth section of cloudflare.com, to the pixel where mappo can reach it.
Theirs is three.js: 16,098 land points sampled from a texture on a 50,000-point Fibonacci lattice, drawn as
squares tangent to a sphere, no sphere behind them, a fog toward the page background, a 45° camera and
OrbitControls locked to the equator. Here the same picture is four attributes on one element:
distribution="uniform", dot-shape="tile", distance="2.37" and
fog="-0.67 1.01", with the land coming from mappo's own Natural Earth mask instead of a picture.
The pins and captions are ordinary DOM inside the element, positioned by mappo; the arcs are
mappo/links, fed the original's curve and faded by the fog at every depth. The spin is the original's: the camera orbits the screen's vertical while
the globe leans 14.3°, so the pole slowly wanders. That motion is decomposed each frame into mappo's
focus, tilt and roll. Drag the globe: the pointer feeds the same damped rotation OrbitControls uses
(a twentieth of what is pending, each frame), so the globe eases after the hand and glides to a stop.
